The sound of West Africa, worldwide
Afrobeats grew out of Nigeria and Ghana in the 2000s, mixing highlife and West African percussion with hip-hop, dancehall and R&B. Today it fills stadiums on every continent, powered by artists such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Tems and Rema.
Not to be confused with Afrobeat, without the s: the horn-driven, political funk that Fela Kuti created in 1970s Lagos. The two are related, and plenty of modern Afrobeats artists sample Fela, but they are different sounds.
