The sound of the church, everywhere
Gospel music grew out of the spirituals sung by enslaved Africans in America and was shaped into its modern form in the Black churches of the 1930s, when Thomas A. Dorsey, often called the father of gospel music, blended sacred lyrics with blues. Its call and response, choirs and soaring vocals went on to shape soul, R&B and much of the pop music that followed.
Across Africa, gospel is one of the biggest genres of all. Nigerian worship songs such as Sinach’s “Way Maker” are sung in churches around the world, South African choirs like Joyous Celebration fill arenas, and Ghana and Uganda have gospel scenes that sit right at the top of their charts. Today’s African gospel draws freely on highlife, Afrobeats and Amapiano, so praise music has never sounded more varied.
