Where Black music began
Jazz was born in the Black communities of New Orleans in the early 1900s, blending blues, ragtime and brass band music. It went on to shape almost everything after it, from soul and funk to hip-hop, which still samples jazz records today.
Soul grew from gospel and rhythm and blues in the 1950s and 60s, and the two genres have traded ideas ever since. These stations lean into that shared history.
